Adopting the middle ground

‘Housing diversity’ is a term often used in Strategic Plans and Planning Schemes across the country.  The aim is to increase housing choice so that we all have access to a range of different housing types to suit our tastes or circumstances throughout our lives. Coupled with this is the desire to increase residential densities within the existing metropolitan area to make more efficient use of current infrastructure and minimise outward growth of our cities (amongst other things).

Running for youth
mental health

Nick Roebuck, one of David Lock Associates’ Melbourne-based planners, is in training for the Melbourne Marathon in October, to raise money and awareness for Headspace National Youth Mental Health Service.

One in 5 people will experience depression by the age of 18 and one in every 6 Australian adults now experiences mental health issues daily.

Headspace aims to be the voice of youth mental health in the areas of service delivery, research and development, service reform, community engagement and advocacy. Headspace has a number of centres across regional and metropolitan Australia providing a range of different staff including doctors, nurses, psychologists, youth workers, social workers and drug and alcohol counsellors for young adults between the ages of 12-25.

Two recent VCAT decisions Samsons (Shoobra) Pty Ltd v Glen Eira CC and Estia Health Pty Ltd v Glen Eira CC have tested the effect of the transitional provisions under the new Victorian residential zones and whether an amendment made after the introduction of the new zones will still benefit from the transitional provisions.

The Power of Delivery – new
planning bodies in NSW and Vic

The Premier of NSW, Mike Baird, has announced plans for a new planning body in Sydney to streamline the delivery of major government infrastructure and planning projects.  The Greater Sydney Commission (GSC) will be charged with delivery on government priorities such as implementing the Sydney Metro Strategy, developing sub-regional plans and acting as a chief government advisor.
