The Greater Launceston Plan

The Greater Launceston Plan (GLP) is a major planning initiative being undertaken by the Launceston City Council in conjunction with the Tasmanian State Government, the Australian Government and with the support of the surrounding municipalities including the West Tamar, George Town, Meander Valley and Northern Midlands Councils.

David Lock Associates, in conjunction with Hill PDA and Pitt and Sherry has prepared the Development Strategy for Launceston Central Area and Precinct Plans for the Mowbray and Kings Meadows District Centres.

All three strategies are based on the overarching vision for Greater Launceston that is oriented around building a more resilient community through investments in human capital and liveability, and greater economic diversity via innovation, creativity, knowledge and enabling infrastructure.

The strategies identify a vision for the future growth of each centre.  They seek to encourage growth through a combination of physical intervention (hard infrastructure) and other activities, actions and governance (soft infrastructure).  They seek to facilitate private sector investment and provide a framework within which council can target public sector funds to facilitate development.

The strategies are currently out on public exhibition and you can comment in the City of Launceston's online forum.  A series of open days, workshops and an online survey are being conducted throughout February 2014.  The strategies will be finalised in April 2014.
