Over the past 6 months, DLA Sydney, in collaboration with Young & Metcalf Architects and Smith & Tracey Architects, have secured 8 DA consents for Uniting. The DA’s relate to access & aesthetic upgrade works to existing seniors living developments across NSW. Our Sydney office collaborated with a diverse team of engineers, traffic planners, architects and landscape architects to help facilitate timely DA approvals for much needed upgrade works. We worked with the design team and local Council’s to ensure compliance with the State Environmental Planning Policy (Housing for Seniors or People with a Disability) 2004 as well as local planning policies.
Changes in expectations, demographics and approaches to caring for an ageing population mean that entrants to independent living villages are now older than they were a generation ago and tend to stay in their homes and require a higher level of care. The approved access and aesthetic upgrades across various Uniting sites will enable the residents to live independently with dignity for longer. Providing level access is fundamental to this, not only for people in wheelchairs but more often for those who use a variety of mobility aids, including walkers as well as for people with a range of medical issues which make flights of stairs an impediment. Upgrading the general aesthetics of facilities particularly through landscaping is also important, to enhance the quality of the accommodation.
