David Lock Associates’ town planning team recently helped Antipodean Developments gain planning approval for a three storey townhouse development (consisting of eight townhouses) at the corner of Canning Street and Belle Vue Place, Carlton. The building - designed by Room 11 Architects – was designed to directly respond to the site’s locational opportunities and constraints, and sets a new benchmark for high-quality townhouse living within Melbourne’s inner city.

The site had a number of constraints relating to access, building height, boundary walls and sensitive residential interfaces, and David Lock Associates was engaged at the inception of the project to advise on all aspects of the proposal, including statutory planning requirements, built form massing, heritage, interface responses, access, ESD and vegetation. Our approach prioritised a collaborative approach that leveraged off our extensive network to seamlessly guide the application through the statutory planning process, which also involved working closely with objecting parties following the public notification of the project to avoid potential VCAT appeals.

The planning approval was granted by the City of Melbourne in November 2015 and construction work will be underway shortly. We look forward to seeing this project take shape and congratulate Antipodean Developments and Room 11 Architects on this benchmark development.
